Question
What can you tell me about the 1 pfennig I have. The front has 1 pfennig with 1800 on it and at the bottom has the initals R.F..
on the other side it has a crown on the top with an H on the left side and an D on the other side of it.There is something coming down the sides to form a circle with what looks like a lion standing on his hind legs and having 2 tails. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks again, Elaine

Answer
Hi Elaine,
Your 1 pfennig coin is from the German state of Hesse-Darmstadt (prior to the unification of the German empire in the 1870's). These coins are fairly uncommon, especially in excellent condition.
A well used coin starts at around $5, but can be as high as $50 for one with only minimal signs of wear. Mint condition coins are rare and sell for $100+.
If you would like to post a follow-up question and attach a pciture of your coin, i cn give you more specific information on the value.
Please don't forget to rate this answer.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
