Question

1760 Austria Coin
Hi,

I have one more. My books do not go this far back and I can not find any information online. This one came in the same lot. It is marked 1760 Austria and has excellent details but I can not identify it. It is about the size of a nickel but much thinner. I can not read the lettering as it is to small however I have attached a photo. Any idea on what it is and the value? I think this one is silver.

Answer
Hi Alex,
It's certainly an interesting item, but I do not believe it was ever a coin.
The design on the left side is in the style of 1710's-1720's Austrian coins. In 1760, this side would have had a denomination at the bottom or in the middle of that side. The side in the left picture has been carved in the manner of a "love token", though I cannot make out what it says.
This would be exonumia item, such as a token or medallion. The value is highly subjective, and depends on the carved message. It may be as low as just a couple of dollars or as high as $25.
Thanks again for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
