Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1892 ZAR 3 pence

Question
Hi

A bit of an odd question but I can't seem to find an answer to this question. What is the metal composition of a 1892 ZAR 3 pence?

Answer
Hi Marc,
It's not an odd question at all. These coins often develop a dark patina which makes it difficult to determine the material.
These South African 3-pence coins are made of .925 sterling silver. The 1892 date is the key date, with a mintage of only 24,000. One is excellent condition runs $50-$100, a well used coin is only about $10 though.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
