Question

Dutch silver 10c coin
I have an old tarnished silver brcelet with 8 coins;
1939,1938,10937,1939, 39, 41,38,38   with wilhelmina Kroningin der nederland 10c. It appears to be handmade and has simple silver metal loops(2) betewwn each coin section, with a fairly simple wire hoop and  clasp(bent piece of flat metal). I. Should I cean it with silver polish to show the wording on the coiuns better? 2. Can you put a value on this item? Is there a market for an item like this? and, if so, any ideas on what I could ask for it?   Thank You.

Answer
Hi Linda, the coins featuring Dutch Queen Wilhelmina (1890-1948) contain .0288 of an ounce of silver each (.23 ounce=about $4). The collector value of each would be about .75 each with moderate wear to $1.50 with light wear. As a part of jewelry they would have no real collector value though.
Cleaning coins that leaves them shiny or scratched, even if only by looking with a magnifying glass, will reduce a coin's value by at least half.
If a coin has been damaged by becoming part of the jewelry or cannot be separated from the jewelry without damage then its value lies in the piece of jewelry and not as a coin.
You might try Ebay.com for similar pieces for comparison.
You might also try a library for a copy of the Standard Catalog of World Coins for pictures, values and lots more interesting info.
