Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1983 penny

Question
Hi, I have a 1983 Lincoln penny with an etching of Maine on the front. The state initials are also inside the state. On the back, in the lower right corner of the Lincoln Memorial, is a very small FG. Can you please help me figure out how rare this coin is?

Answer
Jackson,

The FG on the back is normal for all Lincoln Memorial cents -- it's the designer's initials (Frank Gasparro).

As for the Maine design, somebody just took a normal penny and stamped that into it -- along with the other 49 states on 49 other pennies.  These novelty items were put together into sets, mounted on a display, and sold that way.

The sets go for anywhere from $10 to $20 apiece on eBay -- depending on how nice of a display they are.  The individual coins are worth about 10 cents.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
