Question

Errors
I just opened a fed roll of 1984 pennies. in it I found a silver cent (zinc NO COPPER) I do collect coins but I can not find anything on this. I scratched the side of the plancet thinking someone may of plated this one... it seems to be just (ZINC)???? Thanks

Answer
Russ,

All Lincoln cents since mid-1982 are made almost entirely of zinc, with just a thin outer layer of copper.  Incomplete plating of the strip that the coin blanks are cut out of happens occasionally, resulting in what you have -- an unfinished planchet error.

With the billions of pennies minted every year, this error happens more often than you might think.  These sell at coin shows, generally in the $1 to $2 range.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
