Coin and Paper Money Collecting/2001 Zinc Penny

Question
I was recently going through my change and found this penny. It appears that the obverse side was mis-struck. On the right side of the coin the lip is twice the thickness as a normal penny, but on the left there is no lip. I measured the penny with calipers and got the same measurement, and it is a solid 2.53 grams. Is this a rarity?

Answer
Josh,

This is known as an out-of-collar or off-center error.  However, with the billions of pennies minted each year, this error is not considered rare.  For such a slight misalignment, it's value is less than a dollar.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
