Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Barbados Gold Coin

Question
Can you help me determine the value of a gold coin from Barbados. It is a "On Hundred Dollar" gold piece (from Barbados). commemorating a 350 year anniversary (1625 to 1975). It has a "Seal" of some sort on the front and a "Great Ship with sails" on the reverse. Any idea of the value?

Answer
Hi James,
There are three versions of this coin. All are made of .500 purity gold and contain just under 1/10th of an ounce of pure gold. The normal and proof (mirror-like fields with frosted raised features) versions are worth around $150-$175 on the current market. There is also a rare one that has a velvet finish to it (will have the same texture in the fields as the raised features) that is worth $250-$300.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
