Question
Hi Dmitry,
I have a 1791 Monneron Bros Paris coin with the French Constitution on the back. The coin is about the size of a half dollar and I would say is in good condition. Do you have any idea as to the value of a coin like this, and if so, who would buy it?
Thank you for your consideration,
Corey
Answer Hi Corey,
This is actually a token issue, known as "necessity money". Several large merchants in France took up this practice of making their own jetons and tokens due to the lack of actual government funds (due to the French Revolution).
The value for your piece ranges from $5 to $50+ depending on condition. The piece pictured looks pretty rough and would be in the $5 to $10 range.
These are mostly sought after by French and nearby European buyers, though they are popular on the US market as well. For selling it, eBay would be your best bet.
Thanks for the question!
