Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Gold content of 1976 Bicentennial Medal

Question
I have seen both the large and small gold Bicentennial Medals sold by the U.S. Mint in 1976.  They are claimed by their sellers to be .90 gold, and claim to have .378 ounces for the smaller size and roughly one ounce for the larger size.  The Certificate of Authenticity from the mint states no specific gold content.  How can I obtain assurance of the actual gold content of these medals aside from simply taking the word of the seller?  Thanks.

Answer
Allen,

I have personally had one of the smaller medals tested -- it is made of 90% gold.

The smaller one weighs 12.9 grams -- .373 ounce pure gold

The larger one weighs 40.5 grams -- 1.172 ounce pure gold

Other than this, there really is no certification that you can get, unless you certify it yourself.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
