Question
Good day,
I have found amongst my Dutch Grandmother's possessions a coin with a hole in, inscribed with Koningkrijk der Nederlanden 1877.
Is this valuable/of interest to collectors at all?
Kind regards,
Leida

Answer
Hi Leida,
Unfortunately holed coins do not have collectible value unless it is an especially rare date. In this case, the 1877 is a fairly common date for copper or silver coins from the Netherlands. If your coin is a breown, copper one, it may be worth a dollar or so to someone that wants it for a coin bracelet or other type of crafted item. If it's a silver color coin, it will retain it's bullion value for the weight in silver. There were several denominations for this year... copper 1/2 cent, 1 cent, 2 1/2 cent, silver 5 cents, 10 cents, 25 cents, 1 gulden, 2 1/2 gulden, and gold 5, 10 and 20 gulden.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
