Question
In follow up to the 11/4 posting, I have a similar 50CN coin dated 1898 in very good condition. Would the values be the same. Thank you.

Answer
Hi Linda,
This date would be worth a little more in lower grades (a difference from $2 to maybe $4) than the 1867 coin of this denomination. This is because there were only around 500,000 minted in 1898 as opposed to over 1 million in 1867. However, since the 1867 coins saw an extra 30 years of circulation, they are worth significantly more in high grades.
You 1898 coins with sharp details still visible in the beard and hair, is worth in the $25 range. Mint condition coins are $50 or more.
Thanks again for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
