Question
Mis shapen penny
Mis shapen penny
QUESTION: I just found a disfigured 1986 cent that has been in circulation. The entire surface is very misshapen. In the area of the face it is very thin, maybe 1/3 normal thickness. What could cause this and what would the value be.

ANSWER: Ronald,

This coin has just been mistreated since leaving the mint -- nothing special -- it's just had a rough life.

QUESTION: Dan:   I'm not quite convinced with your answer. None of the shapes  appear as if they have been hit or dented. They appear as if they have been melted, yet there are no burn marks. Also on the back side there is actually material added to fill in a raised area between the columns.  I think there is something else going on here besides a rough life.  I've seen a lot of damaged and worn coins but have never seen one quite like this.
Thanks for your answer.  Ron

Answer
Ron,

I still firmly believe the coin's appearance is completely due to its evironmental influences.  Mistreatment and corrosion is the cause of its appearance.  The raised metal between the columns is the result of the corrosive reaction between the copper and zinc metals -- I've seen this many times.

Not sure what else I can say -- I hope this helps,

Dan
