Question
I just bought an un-circulated 1878 Morgan silver dollar in the original packaging created in the 60's when they found anad then redistributed Morgans to the public.  I paid $512.50 for this. Am I in the ball park or did I pay way too much? Thank you

Answer
Graham,

My first impulse is that you paid too much.  The average uncirculated 1878 GSA dollar is worth about $100 -- if it has a CC mintmark, then about $200.

Now it depends on exactly which 1878 you have -- 7 tailfeathers, 8 tailfeathers, CC mintmark, etc.

If you can send it to NGC and get it certified at least grade MS-64, AND as long as it's NOT the common 7 tailfeather reverse of '78 AND NOT the common S mintmark, then you will have done alright.  Otherwise it will be a money loser.

I hope this helps,

Dan

I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
