Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Rare nickel

Question
Dan,
A few years ago I remember a spot on the national news about a rare nickel that was known to have gotten into circulation by mistake.  It was reported that the nickel was worth a lot of money and I was wondering if you knew the date and any other characteristics of this missing nickel?
Beth

Answer
Beth,

The nickel in the story was a 1913 Liberty Nickel -- one of only 6 known.

All 6 have been accounted for now, and 1 of them will actually be going up for sale at the upcoming FUN auction in Orlando, FL in January 2010 -- I expect it to sell for several million.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
