Question

1862 Old Silver coin
Hi,

I picked this coin up in a lot a month or so ago and I am just getting around to it now and I can not find it in any of my books. One one side it has the Number "1000" and the date 1862 along with something written in what looks like Latin "PETRUS II.D.G.CONST.IMP.ET PERP.BRAS.DEF." On the other side it has a shield of some kind with a globe surrounded by stars in the middle of it, a flower on the bottom and a crown on top. The top of the coin has some kind of slag and going by the weak "62" in the date I would guess some kind of failure when making the coin. The words on the back are "IN HOG SI ???(SLAG)?GNO VINGES" I believe it is Silver and aside from the slag problem on the back I would say its is fair shape. Picture included. Any ideas on what this is or what it is worth?

Thanks.

Answer
Hi Alex,
This is a 1000 reis (pronounces heis) from Brazil while it was still a Portuguese colony. It is indeed silver, .917 purity to be exact. The high purity if what often causes the dark patina that your coin has. I would say it has uncirculated details, but due to the remnants of being soldered (probably had a loop attached) it would get a net grade of extra fine to almost uncirculated.
Typically a mint condition coin sells in the $30 to $50 range. You coin should still do $20 to $30.

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
