Question
I have a Friedrich III Deutschkaiser coin. It is gold in color and I am not sure if it is brass, gold or what. The front has a profile facing the right. The back has a scroll which reads "
lerne leiden ohne zu k lagen" Around the circumference of the back reads "18.October 1831 ./. 15
June 1888"  The coin measures 1-9/6" in diameter.  Any idea as to the value of this coin?

Answer

Friedrich III medal
Hi James,
This is a commemorative medal of the life of Prussian ruler Friedrich III. The dates are his dates of birth and death.
Such medals are usually brass and gilded with silver. This silver often wears of leaving just the faint yellow brass beneath. I've seen these on the European market going for 25 euros for one with the silver gilding intact (see attached photo) or 15 euros for one with the gilding worn off.
Please don't forget to rate this answer.

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
