Coin Collecting - Yankee coins

Expert: PAPAJACK - 11/5/2009

Question
Hi - Are these Yankee coins real? I see NY Yankees World Series gold 30 coin collection on ebay made by Highland Mint? It states Official Yankees 24 karat gold 30 coin collection. Thanks Brad

Answer
Hello Brad,

These are novelty items and hold no numismatic value. They are only as collectable as any trivia souvenir item.
A collector may want them in the future you many not recover what you paid for them.

I do not collect these issues. They are not coins at all but privately issued medals that usually contain silver.
I could not find out what these medals re made of but the gold is only a thin gold plating adding no real precious metal value to the item.

The only value is in the particular design on the pieces.

If you like the design that much you should decide what you are willing to pay above the bullion value for it and save it as a collectable.
My experience with all the privately minted bullion (Franklin Mint, Kennedy Mint, Rarities Mint and others), is that it will one day sell for only its bullion value.
Unless you find a Yankee Collector that really wants the set you may never sell it for more than you paid.

Thank You and Good Luck

PapaJack
