Question
I have a $5 gold piece dated 1885. It seems to be in good condition but has not been in a container. How can I get it evaluated? What is a good way to find a buyer that will offer a fair price?
Thank you for your help.

Answer
Hi Alli, the 90% gold $5 coin should weigh 8.359 grams and would contain .2420 of an ounce of gold. It may have an S mintmark (San Francisco) below the eagle.
Collector value may be worth a little over the gold value depending on amount of wear.
Gold and silver values: http://www.kitco.com/market/ .
You might take it by a local coin shop for a first hand opinion: http://find.mapmuse.com/interest/coin_dealers .
Professional grading companies can certify a coin's grade for a fee. An Internet search will turn up a few.
You might try Ebay.com for similar pieces for comparison.
You might also try a library for a copy of the Guidebook of United States Coins for pictures, values and lots more interesting info.
