Coin Collecting - odd 2000 penny size of a nickel
Expert: Joe Hylas - 11/4/2009
Question I recently found an odd 2000 penny the diameter of a nickel and more the color of a nickel than a regular penny. The head of Lincoln as well as other inscriptions are also larger than that of a normal penny. Enlighten me please.
Answer Hi Tim,
This could be a number of things. #1, a cent struck on a nickel planchet. #2 and cent struck on the correct planchet but without the collar at minting. #3 A cent struck on a foreign planchet. #4, simply a copy of a cent.
A cent should weigh 2.5 grams and a nickel should weigh 5 grams. Weigh them and see what it is.
If this helped you, please rate my answer and possibly nominate me for Expert of the Month.
