Question
hi,
I worked in Russia during the run up to the 1984 Olympics and a lot of contractors were collecting the set of commemorative coins that were being minted by the Russians. I managed to get a a 1 ruble coin.
My question is does this have any value other than its normal value. ?

Thanks David

Answer
Hi David,
My family actually brought a set of these coins over to the US when we moved from the Ukraine in 1990. They are fairly common, but mint condition coins do have some value. These coins were not typically circulated as legal tender so most existing coins are in excellent condition. There are three different 1984 commemorative rubles, which are worth around $5 each. There are also proof strikes, which will have a mirror-like background and frosted looking raised features. These are around $10 each.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
