Question
I was going through some coins that my Grandfather left me and I found one that looks very close to the "1739 V 8 Escudos gold coin. Any input such as origin, worth, etc. about the coin I have would be greatly appreciated. Thanx, John
P.S. I have a picture of the other side of this coin if you want or need it to make a clear decision about the coin!
AnswerHi John, This seems to be a Spanish Peruvian 8 Escudos featuring Spanish King Philip V (1700-46). If you have pictures of each side (not over 1 megabyte each please) of just the coin you can email them to me at tbirde@psknet.com.
Collector value of a coin depends on date, mint mark (if any), number minted and condition of a coin, including amount of wear, any dents, scratches or cleaning as well as collector demand for it.
The letters to each side of the 8 appear to be L and M which should be L and N on the genuine coin. It is not the 'V' variety minted 1739-47 but the 'N' minted 1728-39.

If genuine this 91.7% gold coin should weigh 27.067 grams and would contain .7980 of an ounce of gold. Collector value may be from the gold value up to about $3000 or more depending on the price of gold, wear and demand.
You might also try a library for a copy of the Standard Catalog of World Coins for pictures, values and lots more interesting info. You might find similar pieces on Ebay.com for comparison.
