Question

1800 draped bust
I am advertising on ebay a very worn 1800 draped bust half dollar. I was e-mailed from someone that they did not mint a 1800 half dollar. I advertised it as a filler coin because the reverse is very bad and cannot see any detail. I hope you cab tell me something about this coin because I do not want to sell a phony coin.

Answer
Sorry Leonard, but whomever emailed you about your coin is correct -- there were no half dollars minted in 1800.  Yours is some kind of fantasy coin, privately made.  It may still be worth $10 or $20 as a fantasy piece, but it is illegal to sell it as genuine.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
