Question
I have a 1964 philippine twenty five centros coin.  I read online this coin was issued during a lead trial strike in that country.  It is a dark coin possibly made of copper and zinc.  What is it worth?

Answer
Hi Tracey,
The coin you have is made of an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc. normally these coins are a light silver color, but become dark when they are exposed to salt water or are dug up from the ground. In the best condition these coins are only worth a couple of dollars. The value is still low because they are considered modern coins and there were nearly 50 million made.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
