Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1974 penny

Question
I found a 1974 US penny with the state of West Virginia engraved in the background with the states initials. I was wondering what it was worth.

Answer

Hi Katie,
This is a novelty piece. Such pennies are often stamped with various pieces, such as states, monuments or important people. Most often I see them with a small portrait of Lincoln or Kennedy on them. I've even come across one with a turkey (see attached photo). As such it is worth $2-$3 to an interested collector.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
