Coin and Paper Money Collecting/2-tailed nickel

Question
I have a nickel that has two backs. There is a D mint mark on both sides.  I have no date because it has no front. I can not see any obvious marks to indicate two coins had been cut and glued. Is a coin like this even possible, and if so does it have value. Thank you Becky.

Answer
Sorry Becky, but the way the coin dies are made, you cannot fit the same side die into both sides of the press -- the slots in them will not allow this -- so it's not possible to make a 2-headed or 2-tailed coin.

If you use a 10 power magnifier and examine both sides of the coin, just inside the raised rim, on one side or the other, you will find the seam where the two altered coins are joined together.

These regularly sell in novelty shops and on eBay for a couple dollars.

I hope this helps,

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
