Question
Hi Mr. Moore,
I recently found a 2008 Hawaii quarter that has the Washington side plated in nickel and the opposing side is only copper, it appears that it didn't get plated in nickel. I was wondering if you have ever heard of or seen this misprint before and if you have any information about it? Thanks so much for your time. Happy holidays!

Answer
Leanne,

This is a very popular and sought after unfinished planchet error.  Collectors have been paying $400 and more for certified examples of these state quarters.

You need to send it in to PCGS or NGC and get it certified.  See the following websites for info on how to do that :

I hope this helps,

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
