Question
QUESTION: I have a 400th Anniversary World Circumnavigation 100 Dollar 1980 Elizabeth the Second 900/100 gold coin from the British Virgin Islands. I am not looking to keep the coin but wanted to know if it is worth selling and what I should do with it. Thanks!

ANSWER: Hi Michelle,
This coin contains just over 1/5th of an ounce of pure gold, so it is definitely worth selling.
Despite the very low mintage of only around 5,000 coins these typically sell for gold bullion value at auction. Since gold is at the highest price it's ever been, now would be the best time to sell. At auction you can expect $230-$250. However, retail shops may charge $300 to $350 for a straight sale, though it may take some time to find a willing buyer.
Thanks for the question! =)

QUESTION: Thank you! Do you know of any online auctions for coins that I could do? I am unsure of how to go about selling it since the coin place in my town only said they would give $100 for it.

Answer
Michelle,
The $100 offer is a complete rip-off and the people at that shop should be ashamed of themselves, since they are most certainly aware of the value of gold these days.
Your best bet would be to sell it through eBay. This is the most convenient and easily accessibly venue with no shortage of bidders. I would suggest starting the bidding at $230. It will have no problem selling for at least that much. If you need any assistance with how to list items on eBay, just ask.

Thanks again for the questions! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
