Question

Marck Danske Coin
Hello,

My grandmother gave me a coin that says "Marck Danske".  It looks a lot like the coin below.  The year seems to be 1693.  It has four "IIII".  There is some kind of seal and an elephant at the bottom.

I can't find any information on the coin online.  Do you know anything regarding the origin, circulation, value of this coin?  Thank you!

Answer
Hi Dan, this is a Danish 4 Mark (Krone) from the duchy of Gluckstadt on the Elbe River in northern Germany. The design features the double monogram of King Christian V (1670-99) and on the other side the sash has the Order of the Elephant. It is listed as KM-77.1 in the Standard Catalog of World Coins 17th century edition. This coin should weigh 22.272 grams and would contain .4805 of an ounce of silver. Collector value may be about $200 with that amount of wear.
You might try Ebay.com for similar pieces for comparison.
You might also try a library for a copy of the Standard Catalog of World Coins for pictures, values and lots more interesting info.
