Coin and Paper Money Collecting/RE: 1896 Republic of Liberia penny

Question
Hi there,

I am helping my grandmother go through some old coins and find out there value. We have an 1896 Republic of Liberia penny - do you know what this would be worth today? I do not have an image available - on the tails side, there is a palm tree with a sun set and sailing ship in the background. It looks like some sort of lady liberty head on the heads side.

Thanks for any help you may offer!

Yours,

Laura Brandt

Answer
Hi Laura,
I am quite familiar with the coin you have. They are fairly uncommon, and value really depends on the condition. They start at around $10 for a decent example with not too much wear. A mint condition coin with no signs of wear can run well over $50. Heavily worn coins usually sell for $5 or less.
If you would like to post a follow-up question and attach a photo of the coin, I can give you more specific value information.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.

Collector of world coins since early childhood. Access to a variety of auction records and reference material. You can also find me on Facebook.
