Coin and Paper Money Collecting/US coin circulation

Question
Why is it so hard to find 2009 dimes, nickles, pennies in my change. I enjoy collecting US by finding coins in change and completing denomination folders. It is simple and inexpensive so it works for me. I do understand about commemoritives with the state/territory Qtrs and the life of Lincoln. But really! Is this a marketing effort to force collectors to buy product from the mint rather than just find them in circulation? What am I missing here? Thanks
Bill

Answer
Bill,

There are larger than normal quantities of these coins from prior years still sitting in Federal Reserve Bank vaults.  So the mintages are lower, and they get put behind the older coins in the vault.  They will come out eventually, but it will take a while.

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
