Coin and Paper Money Collecting/coin question resubmitted
Expert: Brad Swain - 12/13/2009
QuestionI am resubmitting my question, as my computer dropped some lettering on the description. "My coin is dated 1919. On the front it says "ONE PENNY" and shows a person sitting in possibly a wheel chair, holding a three pronged sword and wearing A 'viking look' helmet. On the back it says "GEORGIVS V DEI GRA: BRITT:OMN: REX FID:DEF:IND:IMP:" It is in size - smaller than a US 50 cent piece, but larger than a US dollar coin. Can you help me with information and value? Thank You, Heidi"
AnswerHi Heidi, Collector value of a coin depends on denomination (face value), date, mint mark (if any), number minted and condition of a coin, including amount of wear, any dents, scratches or cleaning as well as collector demand for it.
There were 56 million of these bronze British pennies minted that year and it features King George V (1910-36) on one side and on the other side is the allegorical figure of Britannia with shield and a trident which symbolizes Britain's mastery of the seas and worldwide empire. The abbreviated Latin legend stands for By the Grace of God, Ruler and King of Britain, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India. There may be a small H or KN mintmark to the left of the date. If no mintmark it may be worth about .20 with heavy wear to around $2.50 with moderate wear to maybe $17 with light wear. If it has the mintmark let me know and I'll give the value for it.
