Answer
Hi Brian,
This medal was actually proposed and passed by the US Congress. A limited number were made at the Franklin mint, in silver and gold plated as well. The value for something like this is highly subjective. If talking about the general coin collecting market, the value would be that of the silver (which currently trends between $18 and $19 per ounce). However, for someone who specifically collects these types of times a realistic retail value would be closer to $75-$100.
There are commemorative sets similar to this, but your medal was originally made as a single piece.

Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
