Question
I am 62 years old.  I found this coin in the property of my deceased grandmother.  This coin shows the picture of a lady with braided hair.  There are 13 stars on the front also.  On the back it shows 1/2 and at the top it shows California Gold.  My grandmother had several other collector coins, but this one was just recently discovered.  Could you give me information about it.  Thank you.......Rick Dennis

Answer
Rick,

There are many, many counterfeits of these California gold pieces -- even from 100 years ago.

First hand examination by an expert is required.

Check the following websites for listing of local coin shows where you can take the coin to be examined first hand ;

Good luck,

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
