I have both dollars...PLZ Explain the difference 7 vs 8 tailfeathers...1879 ..i count 7 feathers
Hi Cliff,
The tailfeathers refer to the eagle's tailfeathers. 1878 had coins with 7 tailfeathers, 8 tailfeathers and 7 over 8 tailfeathers.
The 8 tailfeather variety was the first struck, then it was changed to the correct 7 tailfeather. Since many dies were originaly made with 8 tailfeathers, these dies were reengraved thus producing 7 over 8 tailfeathers.
All subsequent years would therefore display 7 tailfeathers.
