Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1964 two-headed nickle

Question
I recently came across a double headed 1964 nickle, I compared it to a regular 1964 nickle and it is the same size, weight and color, with the exception of having Jefferson's head on both sides, facing opposite directions. What can you tell me about this nickle, is it worth more than a nickle?

Answer
Tonya,

You have a privately manufactured novelty item known as a magician's coin.  Somebody took two normal coins, altered them, and glued the pieces back together.  If you use a strong magnifier and examine the area just inside the raised rim on both sides of the coin, on one side you will find a seam where the two pieces are joined together.

These sell regularly in magic shops and on eBay for a couple dollars.

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
