Question

Scan072, February 07,
I discovered a 1996 Jefferson Nickel that is physically bigger and is thinner than a normal Nickel.  Could this be from an error during minting or has it been deformed somehow by some other means?

Answer
Hello Rick,

A coin could not be properly stamped if it is too big in diameter for the coin press or too thin for the die to raise the image properly.

So I do suspect that the coin was altered after it left the US Mint.  I have seen these squeezed coins before. They are often rejected by vending machines.

If you do think it is an error first try weighing the piece it should be 5 grams.
I would then direct you to a dealer for his opinion on the piece.

Let me know if you wish to pursue this venue.

Good Luck
