Question
Hi i have a coin on the front it say united states of america. On the back It says fifty centavos then filipinas. It is dated 1944 and is silver. The front has some sort of shield with an eagle on the top with wings spread.Hope you can get me some info on this. Thanks Jerry

Answer
Jerry,

This coin was struck by the U.S. at the San Francisco Mint.  At that time the Philippines was under the sovereignty of the U.S. and during WWII their coins were struck in the U.S.

The silver content in this coin is very low -- perhaps about $2.00 worth.

There were over 19 million of these coins minted in 1944, so they are not considered rare.  Unless the coin is in an almost perfect uncirculated condition, its value will only be for the silver it contains.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
