Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Quarter with partially missing date

Question
Hello, Dan.  I have just found a quarter (well circulated) that appears to be dated "198 " as the fourth digit is missing.  It is stamped with a D.  It doesn't appear to have been scratched or carved out, since the area where the digit should be is very smooth and even with the rest of the coin.  Have you ever heard of a coin like this?
Thank you for taking the time to review my question.

Answer
Vickie,

Missing details like this are usually caused by a foreign substance (like machine grease) that gets into the die before that coin was struck.  The grease prevents the metal from flowing into all the details of the coin die, so some of the details end up missing from the coin.

These coins have very little collector interest -- value at less than a dollar.

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
