Expert: PAPAJACK - 2/8/2009
Questioni recently acquired a 1798 capped bust dollar and the more i read -the more questions i have-the second d in hundred has a u there and the h is missing as well as a u where the d should be in dollar-also the word cents has been stuck twice hard and another soft strike- i understand there were many errors - i have not had an expert look at it yet - i see nothing to indicate a counterfeit-does it sound genuine to you thanx darryl
AnswerHello Darryl,
Can you better describe the edge of the coin to me? Is there any other design?
The coin if real is valuable. Many fakes are reported coming from Asia especially in the Middle East.
These coins have known counterfeit copies being traded as collectables so yours is best looked at by a professional dealer.
If you can try to find a large coin show there are authenticators willing to give their opinion at the show tables for free.
If you can’t find a coin show near you try to find an Early American coin dealer. Or I may be able to help If you can give me the nearest large Cities, some postal zip codes and telephone area codes. I will refer you to an expert in your area.
As you may have read there were slightly different versions of these coins. The dies were made by hand each one is a little different. But I have not seen reports of a Blundered Die with the defects you describe.
Try comparing it to the specifications below.
The 1798 to 1804 dollars measured 26.96 grams 39 to 40 MM diameter
Sorry I cannot help more there is not enough information from the description you supplied.
If you do want a dealer to look at the piece for you, feel free to write me back. And give me the nearest large Cities, some postal zip codes. Please mark the question as private.
I will refer you to an expert in your area.
Thank You and Good Luck,
PapaJack
