Coin and Paper Money Collecting/mechanical double reverse Proof 1970s Nickel

Question
I just read your response to another person about mechanical doubling and I was wondering if a Proof would carry any premium due to the fact they are supposed to be hand picked and inspected. Would I be wrong in assuming that this would be uncommon in proofs? Or would it be more common in proofs due to the process by which they are made?
Thanks for your time.
Steve

Answer
Stephen,

While it would definitely be less common in proof coins, it's only because there are far less proof coins struck, so the dies do not wear out as much as business strike dies.  There is no special handling or inspection at the Mint that has any effect on this (their quality control is atrocious).

Collector interest in mechanically doubled proof coins is just as limited as it is for business strike coins.  You may get a little bonus for it, but not much.

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
