Coin and Paper Money Collecting/penny

Question
Just going thru a jar full of pennies and came across a 1981 penny with what looks to be a horseshoe stamped right next to Lincoln's head. Do you think this was from the stamping or did someone "bang" it in later?  Thanks.
BTW any good source for looking up old coins and their value to get started?    Cindy

Answer
Hi Cindy,

The horseshoe was added later, maybe to give out as a good luck piece.

Check out the Guidebook to US Coins by Yeoman

It will list the retail selling price of every US coin.  This isn't what you could expect if you sell, since it is retail, but it will show you which are the best coins to own
