Coin and Paper Money Collecting/silver proof sets

Question
I know of where some have taken the silver coins out of the proof sets and replaced them with the regular mint issues. Is there a way to tell whether or not the proof set has been tampered with? thanks

Hi Leroy,

Some proof sets come apart very easy, while others are very tough to break open.  Having a lot of experience is the fastest way to tell if there a potential problem with a proof set.

Your best bet is to look at many examples of both clad and silver sets.  A "silver" coin looks different then a clad and you should be able to spot fake sets quickly.  

Objectivity, silver coins will have more weight then clad coins.  Example:  A 90% Silver Quarter has a weight of 6.25 grams and clad coin 5.67 grams.  

I've never seen a switched out set - but you never know.  You will have to be extra careful if you take apart a proof set not to damage the coins.  

Please remember to never clean coins, this can damage and lessen their value.  Also, soft plastics can contain harmful chemicals that can react with coins over time.  Try using inert materials when storing coins.  Plus, it is always a good idea to store coins in a safe.  The safe should not be exposed to the elements and should not be up against a wall to the outside.  These are just a few tips I have learned over the years to help keep your collection in top shape.
