Question
I have a set of thirteen original coins. their is one coin of each of the original states. They were issued in 1975 from The Medallic Art Company. They are struck in 24-karat gold over Sterling Silver.I was wondering what the set might be worth?

Answer
Hello,

Most likely each is housed in a hard plastic or some type of holder.  Because they have no spending value they are medals not coins.  You can check the edge of the medals, it should read Sterling Silver or 925.  The worth of the medals is the melt value in Silver.  You can get a weight per gram.  Currently melt is about 38 cents per gram.  The liquid value is somewhere between 60% to 100% of melt depending on how you sell the items. eBay may be a venue of you to sell them for over melt, but with fees and everything you most likely will end up at the same net value.  A local coin dealer may be able to take them off your hands.  The gold layer is so thin it has no value.  I hope this helps.

If you have any other medals or coins that are not in a protective holder, please remember to never clean them, this can damage and lessen their value.  Also, soft plastics can contain harmful chemicals that can react with medals and coins over time.  Try using inert materials when storing these items.  Plus, it is always a good idea to store valuables in a safe.  The safe should not be exposed to the elements and should not be up against a wall to the outside.  These are just a few tips I have learned over the years to help keep your collection in top shape.
