Answer
Hi Sam,
Steel Pennies were made in 1943, however and few were struck in 1944 because a few coin blanks were left in the presses when the new production started.  The same happened in 1943, a few copper blanks were left from 1942.  1943 copper and 1944 steel cents are rare and worth a few thousand each.

You didn't say what year your was, hopefully it is one of the rare ones as I would love to buy one!
