Question

Strange edging
I found a 1991 p quarter that I think may have some very strange planchet error.  The coin appears as if the copper layer was shrunk to a slightly smaller diameter.  It also has the appearance that it is peeling apart but is quite solid.  The affect does encircle the entire coin.  If I can send more pictures or you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Answer
Chad,

I've been asked about coins like this several times before.

I don't know the mechanical or chemical process involved, but somebody has altered your coin -- it did not come from the mint this way.

A cute novelty, but no collector value.

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
