Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1998 d- Error Penny???
Expert: PAPAJACK - 3/19/2009
Question
I have a 1998 D Licoln Penny that many have tried to snag up from me. The penny is dime sized not penny sized and has fat edges that appear zinc or clad. Edge can almost compair to a nickles edge but not quite as thick. I will attach Image to help with the answer. Have been told it is very rare mint error but I was also told that about a 1999 magicians coin I got in change. Thanks, Mike Myers
AnswerHello Mike,
This does look like it might be an altered coin. Your picture is a bit blurry.
The mint uses a Zinc core on the One Cent and is to be 19 mm in diameter.
Someone has removed the outer edge of the One Cent and made it smaller. This has exposed the Zinc Core that the coin is made of.
You can weigh it if you have an accurate scale to see the difference.
An intact 1988 cent weighs 2.5 grams. If the edge is missing it would be lighter.
Without seeing the piece in person there is no way to research it.
If you want I can refer you to your nearest coin dealer for evaluation of the piece. It must be seen to be judged a picture would not help.
If you write back with the general location (nearest large cities) and telephone area code or codes and some zip codes in your area, I can direct you to an AMERICAN NUMISMATIC ASSOCIATION MEMBER/DEALER near there. They are ethical and trustworthy.
I hope this information is helpful.
