Question
I saw you were asked a question on 2/14/09 about a Blake Co. Assayers $20.00 gold coin and I to have one of these coins with same markings and would like to know how to check to see if it is authentic. The question was asked to Troy Thoreson.

Answer
Hi Daren,
The easiest way is to first check to see if it says "COPY" or "REPLICA" anywhere on it.  Most copies were made of brass, not gold.  Look to see if there are dull spots on the coin or if the coin has a rough surface.
If all else fails, find a local dealer who may be able to take a look at it.  I have seen probably 2 dozen copies, never has someone brought me a genuine one.  You could also send the coin to NUMISMATIC GUARANTEE CORP in Sarasota Florida for authentication.  Their website is www.NGCcoin.COM
