Coin and Paper Money Collecting/SMS coins

Question
I am seeing more and more Washington quarters with SMS included in the description. What does it mean? Thanks.

Answer
Hello Frank,

What date coins are you seeing this SMS designation on?

SMS was a designation used for the Special Mint Set. The original term was for coins that were issued from 1965 to 1967 with no mint marks.
There were no regular proof sets made in these years and the treasury only released the 5 piece Special Sets for collectors.

Feel free to write me with any questions on USA Coins.

Good luck,
