Question
I have several nickels from the 1930's, 1940's, 1950's, 1960's, 1970's, 1980's, and 1990's. I need to know if any of these are worth more than 5 cents each.

Answer
Brenda,

Assuming your coins are in circulated condition .....

The WWII era coins (1942-1945) with a large "P", "D", or "S" over the building on the back are made of silver, and are worth about 30 cents each.

The following dates will have value :
1938-D
1938-S
1939-D
1939-S
1950-D

The "D" or "S" mintmark would be located on the back, to the right of the building.

Lastly, you can check your 1939 nickels for doubling in the words (on the back side) FIVE CENTS and MONTICELLO

The rest are prettymuch spendable.

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
